This process did not arrive in North America very long ago. For the past few years, coffee lovers have been looking for new ways to enjoy their favorite beverage. The rise in popularity of cold coffee, and therefore cold brew, is due to this. This is a more recent way of doing things here, but we must not miss it since it allows us to obtain a less bitter coffee because of the different chemical reactions that occur during its preparation.
If you are a micro roaster coffee lover, you surely enjoy cold brew coffee. Otherwise, this article may pique your curiosity. This very simple technique allows the extraction of new aromas and flavors from the coffee through a long brewing process.
If you feel like trying this technique at home, here are the steps you should follow to make your first cold brew a success!
WHAT YOU NEED TO Make Nitro Cold Brew Coffee
- 1 lb (454 g) of a Cold Brew mix of your choice (We have a blend from Sumatra , milder in intensity, and a blend from Kenya, more intense.
- 2 L of water at room temperature
- Hermetic glass container
- 225g of COLD BREW mix
- 1 L of water at room temperature
- Hermetic glass container
- You can opt for another coffee blend with a darker roast, it’s a matter of personal taste.
- Coarsely grind the coffee and place it in an airtight container or French press. For both options, it is advisable to use a French press coffee grind.
- Stir in the water. It will make bubbles, this is normal.
- Close the container and let it infuse for 12 hours at room temperature.
- Strain the mixture through a coffee filter installed in a colander or if you used a coffee press , simply press the plunger.
Admit it’s pretty simple, right? The hardest part is to wait 12 hours for the brewing process to finish. All you have to do is add a few ice cubes and flavor your coffee according to your preferences (milk, sugar, etc.). Remember to keep cold brewed coffee in the fridge! It will keep for a maximum of one week.
TO MAKE YOUR ICED COFFEE:
- In a glass, add ice cubes, one part cold brewed coffee and one part cold water.
- Flavor your beverage as you prefer (milk, vegetable drink , sugar, maple syrup, etc.).
- For a less intense result in flavors, simply dilute the COLD BREW concentrate more by adding more cold water to your beverage. Enjoy!
A quick note about water: you can use regular tap water , or opt for filtered water (bottled or from the filter built into your refrigerator, for example). The result will be slightly different depending on the option you choose, but know that both work very well!
You could also add spices (eg cinnamon) or orange peels during the maceration period to flavor your coffee.
Finally, you could also make a simple syrup for your cocktail bases, to accompany your ice cream or to add to your waffles. All you need to do is reduce 1 part sugar and 1 part cold brewed coffee in a pot. Once you have brought the liquid to a boil, all you have to do is remove it from the heat and let it cool.
